Talking about GC's HSTs, I think their power cars look 'wrong' with buffers at the front.

IIRC, they were fitted during the ECML electrification project, before the MK4 DVT's were built. They were stuck on the front of the MK4 set, with a 91 on the rear untill all the DVT's were ready for service, and have never been removed. I *think* thats why they have them, not 100% sure!

Correct, they are the last on the mainline IIRC, as EMT have MTUs and VP185s only now

Were those buffers fitted as a feature for drivers and depot staff etc to identify those power cars that could 'remote' control the 91s? Assuming it was the 91 that provided the power to push or pull the trains.

"During 1987, eight HST power cars were converted to Driving van trailers (DVTs), to work with class 91s. This is because the MK4 coaching stock and MK4 DVTs had not been completed."

The power cars converted were:

43013 (Was part of the Network Rail NMT, but now stored)
43014 (Part of the Network Rail NMT)
43065 (Now with Grand Central)
43067 (Now with Grand Central)
43068 (Now with Grand Central)
43080 (Now with Grand Central)
43084 (Now with Grand Central)
43123 (Now with Grand Central)

Did Virgin Cross Country operate any of these power cars at some point? I remember seeing photos of their power cars with buffers at the front, but couldn't remember their numbers though.

They did indeed, I believe all of them were with VXC at one point, although the only one I recall is 43014.
